Information
Susan Fitzgerald Architecture and Brainard Fitzgerald Developments design and build together. The work explores specifics of site and place. However, it is the intimacy between design and the craft of construction; the combined act of making, that shapes the work. It provides the on-going dialogue that influences not only the working process, the type of projects we pursue, and the detailing, but the essence of the work.
In between Site and Architecture
Studying the found potential of a site has shaped much of the work to date. The projects investigate the spaces between buildings, where topography and architecture converge, the boundary between building and site is blurred, and there is atonement between earth and architecture – where land and building meet to create something wholly new.
Sustainability
The work has a holistic sense of sustainability that addresses social and cultural concerns as much as environmental ones. We are particularly interested in micro-architecture; studying and building spaces that are programmatically small but spatially rich.
City Making - Urban Density and Diversity
We have pursued several small-scale urban projects that have become powerful catalysts for change in Nova Scotia. These insertions into the urban fabric challenge ideas about urban density, land use by-laws, programme diversity and the adaptive re-use of old, industrial buildings.
